This was and is still our music. It’s as powerful today as it was back then. And Nancy Piver has done a great job arranging twenty of the greatest songs from the 60′s for the ukulele. Sure, you can probably down-load the lyrics and chords to some of these songs from the internet, but you’d be missing out on some of the richness that’s available in these arrangements, with more interesting chords, a few simple riffs, and a little optional finger-picking. Overall none of these songs are particularly difficult to play and the little embellishments are a fun way to improve your skill. It’s a great choice for the beginner or intermediate player looking to ramp it up a bit and for the “Day Dream Believer” in all of us. It has been a long time coming, but Hal Leonard has just released the definitive (and authorized) Jake Shimabukuro Peace Love Ukulele with transcriptions for 13 of his most popular songs, including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Hallelujah,” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Did I say this wasn’t for the faint of heart? Never-the-less it provides a great opportunity to figure out what he’s doing and how he gets all the great sounds he’s known for. And the best part is, you can take it one step at a time. Notes in the margins even explain how to get some of Jake’s signature sounds, such as a “harp harmonic.” I’m not going to pretend that with this book you’ll end up playing just like Jake, but you will end up with a few new riffs and techniques that you’ll be able to apply to other songs that you play.
Bohemian Rhapsody * Boy Meets Girl * Bring Your Adz * Five Dollars Unleaded 2010 * Go For Broke * Hallelujah * Hula Girl * 143 (Kelly’s Song) 2011 * Pianoforte 2010 * Trapped 2010 * Ukulele Bros. * Variation On A Dance 2010 * While My Guitar Gently Weeps
