Tuning Fork
Those of you who have had the pleasure of attending one of Jim D’Ville’s energetic and informative “Play ‘Ukulele by Ear” workshops know how important a good tuning fork is to your development as a musician. And while an electronic tuner is a great tool for beginners, at some point you need to move on and start listening with your ears instead of focussing your eyes on an electronic needle. A good tuning fork is one of the best ways to get started down that road. Through an exclusive arrangement with Jim, we are offering the official Jim D’Ville 440 A Tuning Fork, not available in stores. These are made in Germany, under exacting standards, and come with complete instructions and a small black carrying pouch to carry them in. No batteries needed and one size fits all. $9.95

Clip-on Tuner
Have you ever tried using an “acoustic” tuner when you’re in a group? How about a pitch pipe? No one should be without at least one chromatic, clip-on tuner and this new one, by Oasis, is one of the best. The functions are easy to use, the screen can be seen onstage or outside, and the buttons are very user friendly. It has a built-in mic so you can use either that or the internal vibration tuning mode. And it has a visual metronome. It is nice and compact, the screen is bright, and the tuning needle is clear. It attaches to the headstock of your ‘ukulele and can rotate in all directions making it easy to see. It is really one of the best ones we’ve seen in a long time. $19.95

Via Hand Exerciser
Why waste precious minutes at your computer or sitting in traffic, when you could be using that time to exercise your fingers for greater strength and dexterity, which can only enhance your ‘ukulele playing? Available in two tensions, the VIA is an entry-level grip, ideal for improving overall hand health as well as fretboard mastery: light (4lbs per finger) is recommended for children over 12 years and seniors wanting to regain diminished dexterity; and medium (6lbs per finger) is recommended for the average woman’s hand and men preferring more repetitions at lesser resistance. Give it a whirl, you’ll be astonished at how weak a couple of those fingers are. $11.99

Oasis ‘Ukulele Humidifier
Most of us have seen those ads in eBay for that rare old vintage Martin or Kamaka “with a few minor cracks.” Did you ever wonder what might have caused those ukes to crack? More often than not, it’s dry weather. Repairing the cracked top of a fine ’ukulele is not only expensive, it can alter the sound of your instrument. Fortunately for us, Oasis, who has been making guitar humidifiers for years, has come up with a wonderful solution just for ‘ukuleles: a sound hole humidifier that fits between the strings of your instrument. The body of the humidifier is made from a fabric that allows water vapor (but not water) to pass through it and is filled with super absorbent polymer crystals. You add the water. As the vapor transmission takes place, the humidifer shrinks so you can determine when it is ready to refill. Simply unscrew the black cap, fill with water to the top of the container, and replace the cap. The folks at the NAMM show recognized it as one of the best products at the show this year. It’s a pretty smart way to protect your instrument for years to come. $19.95
